Mariinsky Theatre presents: Swan Lake in LIVE 3D!

Are you a ballet and dance fanatic? Have you been dying to watch the Swan Lake Ballet? Do you love 3D cinema?

If you said yes to any of those questions, we have great news for you!!

Celebrating 275 years of Russian ballet, the world renowned Mariinsky Theatre has premiered the classic SWAN LAKE ballet performance in 3D LIVE!!

The best part? It’s been transmitted to cinemas in more than 50 countries around the world, providing audiences across the seas to simultaneously join in on the awe inspiring performance of a lifetime!

Produced by the Cameron Pace Group (owned by James Cameron and Vince Pace), who brought us Oscar-winning 3D movies like Avatar and Life of Pi, this is the world’s very first 3D LIVE transmission of ballet to cinema that has not disappointed!

The Swan Lake 3D Live Special Event was filmed in the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre and simultaneously displayed in a screen in the new state of the art auditorium – Mariinsky 2.

In the new Mariinsky 2 auditorium – which is a stunning modern replica of the dimensions of the old theatre- an audience of around 2000 people, from St Petersburg and abroad, donned 3D glasses to watch Swan Lake Live in 3D on a large screen: as it was danced in the Mariinsky theatre next door.

The aim is to reach as many people around the world as possible, especially for those that never get a chance to see the performance from miles away. And so, Swan Lake 3D has been shown Live in Russia West of Moscow and Europe, the United States, Central and South America – and recorded as Live in Russia East of Moscow, South Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Even more so, the event will possible to see in Live 3D, recorded 3D, 2D Live and recorded!

It is an experience you don’t want to miss out on!

‘It’s the perfect marriage of art and technology: the best ballet company in the world and the world’s most advanced 3D technology.’

The Mariinsky corps de ballet has claimed it “A sublime account of the world’s best loved ballet, as every back has the same soft-swept arch, every arm the same airy line from shoulder to fingertip, every neck is identically poised, every gaze parallel. The effect is ravishing.”

Valery Gergiev raved, “Mariinsky Live 3D format is something totally new not only for us but also for the whole world. Looking at this opportunity it’s to both display the qualities of the company but to do it with the newest possible technology”.

So why not dive in on an experience of the lifetime?!

Join thousands of others and Russian, Hollywood, and International guest stars who have already watched Tchaikovsky’s classic SWAN LAKE ballet for the world’s first ever LIVE 3D broadcast of theatre!! And do it with a fresh new pair of your favorite INGRI:DAHLs!

Why 3D films are causing headaches!

As many of you know, ever since the 3D film Avatarstereo and multiview video entertainment (aka 3D) has become a very popular trend. However, as the realm of 3D cinema increases, many viewers have steered away from the new technology. Why? Many viewers report that the special effects in the 3D films cause eyestrains and headaches.

And so, in an effort to understand these technical problems, the Graphics and Media Lab CMC at Lomonosov Moscow State University, conducted research and analysis on the stereoscopic camera systems in five popular 3D films. Utilizing a unique tool for stereo video quality measurement (VQMT3D), the lab found that the key reasons for visual discomfort from 3D film viewing were (1) horizontal
disparity (2) vertical disparity (3) color mismatch (4) sharpness mismatch.
Ross Copeland, a post-production stereographer, reports that “filming 3D is
complex, and even the best rigs and crews can end up with some issues in shots
that must then be fixed in postproduction. Some problems can be fixed easily,
some are very difficult and some cannot be fixed at all…(However, the
development of software tools), will help improve 3D filming, helping produce a
much more comfortable viewer experience.”

Based on an analysis of Resident Evil: Afterlife and Galapagos: the Enchanted Voyage, few of the detected problems they found were:

1)   Huge inter-view color and geometry mismatches

res_evil_color_geometry_problem

2)   Excessive positive parallax artifact, which causes viewing to be painful when projected on a big TV or 3D projector due to eye divergence

3)   Inter-frame sharpness mismatch

The lab analyzed 10 different movies that showed color mismatches in the 3D frames based on their respective color mismatch metric numbers.

Even more so, the lab created a histogram that laid out the mismatch metric values distribution throughout each film.

Ok, great. So what does this all mean?

Well, the decreasing number of color mismatches on the charts shows that improvements are being made in stereo quality, meaning less eye strains and headaches for 3D viewers! The Graphics and Media Lab are constantly working to improve the viewer experience and soon hope that a high 3D video quality will result in more viewers leaving the theaters with less annoyance and good impressions from the image quality and storytelling.

The Coachella KRoq House + Vizio + Ingri:Dahl = LOVE

It was such an honor back in February when Vizio called us to invite us to participate at their Superbowl Event in Indianapolis. Now we are overexcited to announce that we have been invited to partner with them again – this time at the KRoq House at the amazing music festival, Coachella.  From the site, fans will be able to select from five VIZIO tablets located throughout the KROQ Coachella House, and chat live with recording artists and revelers over the two festival weekends this month. This year, the KROQ Coachella House will host bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), The Hives, Kasabian, Metronomy, Miike Snow and The Shins, who will perform exclusive live shows for a select crowd of KROQ Radio listeners and fans. We can’t wait to show you pictures next week.

Look at this bad boy! Love Vizio 3D TVs! Of course we don our own 3D glasses from Ingri:Dahl 🙂

In the meantime, enjoy this video from Mumford & Sons private concert at the KRoq House last year. Love that song! ❤
